CONNECTING IN THE REAL WORLD

Great food is central the best times in life.  The owners of Pica Pica understand this intuitively on so many levels and it’s the basis for their continued success and growth.  We’re in the middle of re-branding the visual system and approach to social media while simultaneously planning the launch of their third restaurant in the Castro.  Social media, Facebook especially, is maturing fast.  The biggest and most exciting aspect of Facebook is that people want their online identity and experience to cross over into the real world.  It’s not enough to simply start a page, pimp your brand message and offer endless “special offers.” It offers no real value and long term cheapens your brand.  You have to embody an idea others can connect with, join and collaborate with in the real world.  It offers so many more opportunities as well as being more genuine and human.  We’re stepping out from behind our Facebook page and launching some fun that will certainly inspire others to get out from behind their computers as well.  We just launced our first TREASURE HUNT!  Come play with us!

LESLEY EVERS | romancing rockridge

I spent a day with some of my favorite ladies over at Lesley Evers for a couple pickup shots for her 2011 line.  Gas stations, hipster hot rods, bubbly balloons and whatever nifty things Lesley could dig up, served as inspiration for the day.

I’m always amazed how much creativity Lesley can whip together.  We all click, play, have fun and see what happens.  It’s not the typical approach for what you’d expect for these types of shoots, but the spontaneity has a way of  creating authenticity.  Much credit is due to the timeless grace of Lesley’s brand model, Laurie Brown who always knows just where to take a scene.  Makeup and several hair styles where created during the day by the most amazing part of the production team, Meaganne McCandess. I lost track over how many styles Meaganne managed to conjure up in the day.

Lesley Evers continues to attract a lot of industry attention and talent.  We’re expecting great things to continue to emerge from her studio.  Check out her A-photographer, Laura Rosen blog for more details of Lesley’s clothing and get a serving of some very lusty “daily pie” as Laura describes it.

QUENTIN AND KODAK

I love reading and sharing tips and tricks to just about anything.  A marketing colleague/friend of Leah and I works for Kodak Gallery and arranged for me to write a feature for the Kodak Gallery newsletter.  The newsletter has something like, 1.8 million subscribers. I’ve coincidently been photographing more families lately and the question arose from Kodak on how all of this has impacted my personal work and what tips I might offer for parents.  Check out and their newsletter and subscribe.  They’re connecting photographers of all experience levels, tips and tricks are certain to be found.  See it here

TAKE THIS LOLLIPOP | forces of antagonism

Stories can only be as good as the treatment given to the forces of antagonism which the characters we identify with must face.  What happens in a society where cultural values change, where there are no longer widely accepted values to play our characters against?  Creativity is always the key, but I couldn’t help but notice this on Facebook.  This is a force of antagonism so identifiable and visceral that after watching I felt such an overwhelming sense of violation.   You’ll want to say it’s only a movIe but you can’t, because the potential is just so plausible.  When online commercials and media tap into this type of data to market to you, rather than scare you, what might the outcome look like?

THINK (AND COMMUNICATE) DIFFERENT

YouTube Preview Image

I believe what Steve has always inspired in us is that Apple is an idea and inspiration greater than computers and elegant devices. It’s about living the “authentic” life, one that is an expression of a core value, cause or belief.  Steve Jobs is not a genius as much as a modern day shaman.  He helped us self-examine and inspired us to connect with our hearts song along with finding some good music to play through the journey.

When businesses speak of themselves through their value cause or belief, they inspire a connection with something greater than the sum of their parts.  Customers, “people” connect with the value and make it theirs.  Your product or service becomes and expression of that value.  It’s much more sustainable long term and drives behavior and loyalty far beyond any other element your business may offer.  Think Different.

Thank you, Steve.
